The Shops at Dartington is unveiling a brand-new look for their own-labelled cider range, made with locally grown Devon apples. The clean, fresher look reflects the premium position of the cider, which is hand-pressed using apples from ancient organic orchards.
The range has been produced in collaboration with award-winning Ashridge Cider who grow up to 15 different varieties of bittersweet and bittersharp cider apples in Staverton, near Totnes. The cider will be available to sample during The Shops at Dartington’s Christmas Fair on 16th and 17th December.
Apples are intrinsically linked to The Shops at Dartington, as part of The Shops are situated within an old apple barn. From the 1930’s – 1950’s, the local apple harvest was brought and stored within the old brick building, before being pressed and made into cider. Although cider is no longer pressed on-site now, the old traditional cider press still stands outside Tog 24.
The range consists of:
Dartington Organic Vintage £2.99 – a fruity, lightly carbonated medium dry cider, made from 100% pure apple juice.
Dartington Organic Devon Blush £2.99 – a fruity, lightly carbonated medium-sweet cider, with added blackberry.
Dartington Organic Gift Box £13.99 – two bottles of the Vintage and two bottles of Devon Blush, displayed in a gift box for the perfect present.
According to Westons Cider Report 2017, The UK consumes 787 million litres of cider a year – the same volume as nine Royal Albert Halls. Within this sector, the premium cider market has grown by 24%, with more demand from millennials who choose to consume bottled cider.
The Shops at Dartington is a group of 14 shops and cafes, located in a beautiful rural setting. The group is owned by the Dartington Hall Trust, an independent charitable organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to help support the Trust’s activities in social justice, sustainability and the arts.
In addition to stocking locally made cider, The Food Shop holds nearly 90% of stock made in Britain, of which 60% is from Devon and a further 22% is from the broader west country.
