Reawaken a bygone era of adventure and trade with Salcombe Distilling Co.’s new limited-edition gift set of cask aged ‘Finisterre’ gin accompanied by a bottle of ultra traditional Bodegas Tradición 12 Year Old Fino sherry.
An intriguing collaboration between Bodegas Tradición, one of the most respected Sherry Bodegas in Spain, that traces its roots back to 1650 and award-winning Salcombe Distilling Co. based in South Devon. The brand partnership is inspired by the famous nineteenth century trading routes of the Salcombe Fruit Schooners, that in addition to citrus fruit and spices, through documented evidence are known to have carried sherry from Cadiz to England.
Aged in the same cask from which the accompanying Fino was drawn, this limited-edition ‘Finisterre’ gin, derives its name from the Spanish ‘finis terre’ meaning end of the earth, from which Salcombe Distilling Co. source the finest ingredients and materials, to produce exceptional gin. Distilled with an unrivalled passion, care and attention to detail, the gin has been lovingly aged at the Salcombe Gin distillery in a 624 litre American oak Fino sherry cask which co-founder Angus Lugsdin handpicked at Bodegas Tradición, Jerez.
Commenting on the collaboration, Angus Lugsdin says: “We are honoured to work with the prestigious Bodegas Tradición to create a limited batch of 825 bottles of cask aged gin. The fresh citrus notes are tempered through the cask ageing process which takes approximately three months, creating wonderful candied citrus aromas and moreish saline notes from the aged Fino. The result is a complex yet sophisticated gin with great character and depth of flavour. “
Lorenzo Garcia-Iglesias, General Manager of Bodegas Tradición commented: “We share the same passion and dynamism as Salcombe Distilling Co. to only create exceptional produce, so were delighted they selected one of our beautiful casks in which to age their fantastic gin and our Fino sherry to be included in their gift set. Our Fino is produced exclusively from the Palomino Fino grape and has been aged in an American oak cask for at least 12 years, far longer than most Finos and sets the standard against which all other Finos are judged.”
Co-founder Howard Davies from Salcombe Distilling Co, continues: “We’ve always been curious about cask aged gin and are thrilled with this extraordinary product. Delicious served on its own over ice, mixed with a premium tonic or soda water or our perfect serve is in a Martini married with the delectable Fino in place of the more traditional vermouth.
Located in Jerez, Spain, Bodegas Tradición is a unique Jerez bodega, renowned for producing genre-defining aged wines using traditional and time-honoured methods. It traces its roots back to Bodega CZ, J.M. Rivero, established in 1650, the oldest known sherry house and supplier by appointment to the Royal House of Spain
Produced in very small quantities, this Fino was drawn from an 80-year-old cask and has delicate saline savoury notes that make it very moreish with great complexity and length of finish (15% ABV, 75cl).
Launched in July 2016, Salcombe Distilling Co. has enjoyed a flurry of awards over the past year for Salcombe Gin ‘Start Point’, including 3 Stars at the Great Taste Awards and Best Producer award at the Food & Drink Devon Awards. International success was achieved with Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition and Gold at the World Drinks Awards. Salcombe Gin ‘Start Point’ is hand distilled in South Devon using only the finest hand sourced ingredients. The zesty blend of grapefruits, lemons and limes is a nod to the famous Salcombe Fruiters, who imported around 80% of the citrus fruits to England during the 19th century. Harbouring distinct notes of ruby red grapefruit, along with the heady, earthy pine notes of the finest Macedonia juniper, Salcombe Gin is the perfect balance of aromas and flavours with an amazing lingering finish.
