Coffee #1, Drake Circus, Plymouth – by Sue Stoneman

I ‘m always on a look out for a good cup of coffee when out and about, so it’s great to know there’s an award winning Coffee#1 at Drakes Circus, Plymouth. It has been open for about six months now and has a lovely homely and airy décor with plenty of comfy sofas inside and a huge open front which spreads out onto the pavement.

I was in Plymouth for a foodie visit and called in for a light bite and a coffee – oh, and a cake! It was fairly quiet for a Thursday, maybe everyone had headed for the beach as it was a sunny June day?

There was a selection of savoury bites ranging from flatbreads, filled ciabattas, croissants, pies and wraps, with plenty of choice for the non-meat eater too, as well as soups and salads. If you’ve left the house and not had time for breakfast you could grab some porridge, toast, bacon bap or a breakfast burrito. If it was a coffee and a cake stop you were after, then you would be spoilt for choice here.

Coffee#1 has something for everyone from flapjacks, pretzel cakes, lemon drizzle, cherry frangipanes, brownies, as well as lots more tasty bakery treats.

I went for a Flatbread Medley with chicken, salami, mozzarella, roasted peppers, red pesto, rocket and spinach (toasted, as the barista recommended)This was brought to the table once it was ready and it came with a few dressed salad leaves. It was very tasty and not too filling, leaving room for cake! My accompanying latte was made with the smooth and sweet new Seasonal Honduras blend.

If you couldn’t decide which cake to choose, then you could have a plate of a mix of three mini sized pieces which might tickle your sweet taste buds. I went for the large Almond croissant as it was for sharing. It was lovely and light and filled with a good amount of crème patisserie.

If you like the coffee you can buy the beans or have them ground so you can enjoy your favourite coffee at home. A good idea I thought were the nicely wrapped gift packs of coffee beans and flavoured syrups if you had a coffee lover friend, or you could even help yourself to a free bag of used coffee grounds which are great for your garden!

Coffee#1 offer a loyalty card where you can earn yourself a free cuppa after ten drinks.

I’ve now checked out where Coffee#1 is located in Devon. They are in Sidmouth, Exeter, Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton and Honiton. There are lots more nationwide too.

I’ll be heading for my nearest one in Exeter next time I’m in town.
