I first met Chris at the Dartington Food Fair in May, when we were both demoing in the food and drink marquee and he mentioned his new venture then, so I was delighted to be able to attend the launch of his new ‘Cooking Workshop’ and venue for Private Dining Events.
Situated just further along the main road from the Shops at Dartington, heading towards Totnes, you will find Chris’ lovely house and cookery school. The large kitchen was the hive of activity with Chris’ chef and assistant (under his supervision) preparing some delicious canapes in what will be the cookery workshop, and just off to the right was the cosy dining room. This was elegantly decorated with candles and crockery set up for a dinner party and would seat about ten people, ideal for those special celebration meals or intimate gatherings. There is a spacious lounge area down from the kitchen where guests can relax while they watch their meal being prepared and cooked, giving them the opportunity to chat to Chris if they like before going in to eat.
Guests at the launch were treated to some tasty canapes including:
- Pork cheek braised with Oloroso and prunes
- Beauvale blue cheese, pickled Asian pear and candied pecan
- Jamon croquettas
- Five spiced goose sausage, mango and burnt chilli dip
- Squid ink crisp with oyster veloute
- Crab aracini with saffron aioli
- Carrot kofta with honey and rose harissa yoghurt
- Goat cheese and crème fraiche, red onion confit, broad bean and PX reduction on walnut toast
- Strawberry gazpacho
- Chorizo in dry cider
These are some of the dishes you may be making or eating when you attend Chris’ kitchen and very delicious and moreish they were too! The canapes were washed down with some wonderful wine, Salcombe Gin, Luscombe Tonics and Salcombe Brewery Ales – keeping everything local.
The cooking workshops would be great for those of you who wish to improve your cooking skills and enhance your range of worldwide cuisine. Chris has travelled far and wide gaining extensive knowledge of different cooking cultures and cuisines. These workshops will be suitable for family groups, friends and even Hen Parties, which can be tailor-made to suit your requirements with the option of having some treatments by the beautician and registered massage practitioner in the private treatment rooms next door. Wine tastings can be matched with your meal and, with this in mind, you will need to organise transport home!
Dates already in the October diary have included Mediterranean Cooking, Indian Feast for Vegetarians, Indian Feast – Meat & Fish, and Beer Butchery & BBQ Cooking on charcoal. In November you can still book Thai Cooking- from street food to beach food. Prices start at £125 for the cookery days.
