On Friday of last week, a little basement in Torquay (a former Greek café) bustled with excitement and just a dash of chaos. Pots and pans clashed, knives and forks clattered, glasses of wine and cocktails clinked, and the gentle hum of hungry guests filled the air. This bustling lower ground floor premises is the new home of Terra Marique Brasserie
The restaurant is a brand-new family-run enterprise nestled on Union Street, Torquay. Enthusiastically fronted by Hollie Adams, assisted by her sister Abi and her parents, Steve and Caroline, the focus of the restaurant is finest quality local produce served in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and an inviting environment.
The 8th was a special evening for the family and their fantastic head chef, Cory Benham; a real rising star in the industry and at 23 one of the youngest head chefs in the country. Trained by Marco Pierre White and his Executive chef, Chris Warwick, his 7-course tasting menu received with 5 star commendation from the delighted diners; family and friends who came to sample not only the food and drink but the service and atmosphere.
Although the universe had not been on the side of the close knit team that day, service was like a dream and the food was received exceptionally well, capably directed by one of Michael Caines’ former floor managers who is assisting as an advisor.
Favourites included the artichoke soup with an artichoke crisp, our Creedy Carver duck, and the lemon curd tartlet with fresh strawberry sorbet. The restaurant will be offering two fantastic tasting menus, a 5 and 7 course, designed and cooked by Cory and his Sous Chef Bear ( who has spent a short time working with Michael Caines and John Burton Race, Bear was trained by Simon Rogan back in the late 90’s). The restaurant is now taking bookings for their Grand opening weekend of Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd March.
The variety of seafood and meat dishes on the taster menu can be sampled along with a wine tasting menu designed to complement each dish. Each provides something for lovers of fine food may never have experienced before and which they will not be disappointed with.
The cosy ambiance of the dining room offers accents of Victorian era décor and a steampunk design with industrial design clocks and light fittings, Victorian trinkets in little coves, Edison bulbs light the area in an ambient glow, and real
Victorian newspapers cover the tables so that guests can read all about the advertisements of the day.
The bar is well-stocked with beautifully displayed spirits, many locally produced, from rhubarb gin and tiki fire rum to coffee tequila and Frangelico (hazelnut) liqueur, all housed on copper piping shelves. The cocktail menu has a variety of classics, specials and signature offerings, which are added to and changed every few weeks, and the carefully selected fine wine list provides a closely matched compliment to the food menu.
Terra Marique Brasserie is something different to enjoy and an experience in itself. It is open for bookings now and opens the weekend of the 22nd March. Bookings can be made via Facebook, Instagram, phone, and some walk ins.
