I cast my mind back to November 2017; a new independent kid on the street opened with much anticipation – South Street Standard. The 4th child for it’s Bristol based owners, it paired back yet funky warehouse vibe coupled with food-porn-esque, tasty, tummy filling food it was sure to be a hit. Fast forward 18 months, and chef Ben Marsh (also well known to some as Ben Corcutt) has been stamping his foodie mark firmly on the street and the food offering in the Exeter kitchen.
On the back of the recent launch of the new In Exeter Eat and Drink in Exeter Guide, the team invited us along to South St Standard, so we recently popped in for a bite to eat pre-theatre.
Some refreshment was needed so we indulged in their Thursday offering of 2-4-1 cocktails to start, with a refreshing Elderflower Fizz.
With our timescale quite fixed we decided to dive into the main event; not being able to decide on one specific main each, we opted for the meat platter – fried chicken, BBQ pulled pork, Korean beef short rib, rocket salad, corn on the cob w/ chimichurri, garlic flatbread, BBQ sauce, sour cream & spiced skinny fries.
All the meat was delicious, with the pulled pork and beef shirt rib tender, and easily pulling apart with little effort. Corn on the cob, smothered in herby chimichurri sauce, a zingy and naturally sweet combo. The wafer thin garlic pizza-like slices are a fab addition, allowing you the garlicky crunch but without the heavy bread.
We added a bit more of our 5-a-day with some generous sides of juicy oven roasted mushrooms and crunchy slaw.
If you’re not a meat eater they do some excellent vegetarian meals as well as an equally epic vegan platter! Ben prides himself on pushing the boundaries with vegan food, that anyone would want to eat, carnivore or not so be sure to check it out.
Another couple of cocktails found their way into our hands, and then it was time to move on to our show at the local theatre. We were pretty content anyway so didn’t miss out on not considering the sweet offering.
