News: Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish opening plans for Sidmouth 2020

Rockfish, the seafood restaurant group run by restaurateur Mitch Tonks has submitted formal planning permission for the development and changes of use of the historic Drill Hall on Sidmouth’s sea front.

Rockfish were the preferred bidder in a recent tender scheme which involved bids from other businesses and the community being submitted.

The design by Grainge Architects in Exeter retains the key features of the building adding a balcony overlooking the sea and openings in the east facing elevation to bring in light and allow spectacular views of the coastline. The exterior of the building Is designed to looked like a working fishing building that is sympathetic with the neighbouring sailing club, RNLI & trawler agents.

The drill hall is known by local residents for its unique interior features, all of which are being retained and enhanced as part of the scheme by leading designers Macaulay Sinclair.

The restaurant will operate in the same successful formula as the other Rockfish restaurants in Dartmouth, Plymouth, Torquay, Exmouth, Plymouth, Weymouth & Exeter. The restaurant will serve fresh seafood delivered daily from their Brixham premises which is bought & prepared fresh on the market every day. Earlier this month Rockfish took their first step into commercial fishing in a collaboration with trawler owners and skipper, Nick Fisher, Jamie Macdonald and Nick Rich. The vessel catches fish exclusively for Rockfish.

Investment into the Sidmouth project will be in excess of £1m and there will be the creation of 30-40 local jobs.

Mitch Tonks said, “The Drill Hall is a unique site that has been empty for a long time, it has the most unique features that we are looking to retain and enhance as part of our scheme so as we can bring the building back to its former glory. Sidmouth is a wonderful seaside town that fits our ethos of fresh fish being eaten by the sea and if our application is successful, we are very much looking forward to making Rockfish Sidmouth a leading seafood destination and a community asset”
